A Summer’s Note

A Summer’s Note

I’m writing this in a beach house with doors open to the sea, listening to the waves and feeling the salt air. A pod of pilot whales swam by a little while ago; I watched their glossy black backs lift just before they sounded, and felt strong love for them and all creatures in our beautiful oceans.

Since my last post, I’ve been traveling, researching, and spending time with my family and friends. I wrote a monologue as part of the play Motherhood Out Loud, and have felt thrilled to see it performed. I’ve been practicing guitar, playing in a band with two friends—all three of us live on the same street in Chelsea. (Our gigs are in my living room, and our audience is my three cats.)

Also, as you’ll soon see, I’ve been working with a friend on a series of videos, soon to premiere and become a regular feature on this site. I’ve been really lucky to be working with such amazing people in bringing this website to life. It’s been all fun and all play, and I’m really excited to have you here.

Mainly, as always, I’ve been writing. I’ve finished a new novel, and I’ll tell you about it soon. Until then, have a wonderful summer. Enjoy whatever is making your spirit rise these days. Don’t forget to wish on shooting stars!

Yours,
Luanne

I own all of your books excepts Secrets of Paris, which I am over joyed that it is being rereleased in 2011. Most of the books I have are hardback, there is just something beautiful in a hardback book. Plus there is no way I can wait for paperback. Was wondering if there is any way I could mail at least one of my books to have you sign as to date you have not been to my area of the country. Love your books, they are an escape into a new world where all my fears and worries of this world can just fade away for a while. Thank you for your beautiful stories.

Hi Luanne. I am a huge fan…love all of your books, particularly relate to the beach/ocean books…I, myself, almost feel as if I’m going through withdrawal if I don’t get into the ocean to swim on a regular basis. It feels like it is part of who I am…

    SWIM!
my therapist wrote that on a card a few years ago and i refer to it often. swimming always sets me right. in the ocean, i feel i am in my element. concerns slip away, and i’m one with the sea. i hope you can find frequent ways into the ocean. as you say, i think it is who we are…

    dear kay,
i am really sorry to hear about your mother. i’m sure you miss her terribly, and i’m touched to know that “last kiss” is a connection to her life. my mother adored books, was always reading one, and i cherish the books she read during the months before she died. one was “Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Paris” by Paul Gallico–the very same novel she was reading decades ago when she was pregnant with my youngest sister. books soothed my mother’s way out of this world. i’m honored to know your mother was reading my novel at the end of her life.

Luanne, I live in Corpus Christi, TX. I counted a few days ago and I have 16 of your books in hard back. I think even if they cost $100 each I’d still have to buy them, lol. I just got a nook and while I love it, I will still be purchasing your books the old fashioned way.

    dear wanda,
you’re the best! thank you. i love and support books in all forms, but i’m with you–there’s something about a hardcover book. the literal weight of it, holding it in your hands, turning the pages…enjoying the cover art and the book design. books live and breathe–in our minds and imaginations certainly, but also in our libraries, on our bedside tables, in some forgotten corner to be found and loved again.

I have read two of your books so far: Follow the Stars Home and Light of the Moon. Both of them have touched me in amazing ways. It’s as if I was meant to read those two books. I can relate to them both. Light of the Moon was so beautiful and moving that it felt painful when I was done — hated to be done. Thank you for sharing your love and beauty with us all. God Bless you …

Hi Luanne, I just finished reading Summer’s Child and Summer of Roses; I found the double-book (bonus!) on the loaner shelf at work. Now I’ve set a goal of vacationing in Nova Scotia next summer. I’ve always wanted to go there, but now the desire is even stronger.

I’ve read all of your books that my local library carries, so now must quest for the rest. It will be a delightful pursuit. :)

Thank you for writing such wonderful books that allow me to escape my daily concerns.

    Luanne,

My daughter and I met you several years ago at the Groton Library when Sandcastles came out. Do you remember? you had told her then that she could contact you and you would talk to her about writing, but when she has tried to contact you through the channels mentioned on your site, there’s never a response. Do you have a better way for her to contact you? She is very disappointed.

I have recently lost my father to cancer and shortly after my mother was diagnosed with cancer she has been through one surgery and is now on her second round of radiation, a nother tumor has been found. I read your books to help me escape. Both of my parents loved the ocean and when I read your books I can imagine being right there. Thanks for the escape.

Luanne… years ago a friend picked up one of your novels while in the Denver airport. To her surprise, there was a character in the book named “Claudia Barton”. Since I live in East Haddam, she thought we might be past school-chums. I assured her we were not….. but the wonderful thing was she introduced me to your art. I, like so many others, love the fact that your work can relieve me of the daily grind we all endure. I think of you often on my drive home from work (Millstone), up 156, through Old Lyme. Thank you so much for all the smiles! CBD

Hi Luanne! You are an amazing writer, thank you for taking me to Hubbard’s Point over & over in my mind. My Mom & I both love reading your novels passing them between us. We would like to take a getaway & experience the beaches that inspired you. I know it is Old Lyme, CT, however can you suggest a place we might stay to capture the magic? Thank you!

    Luanne,
I have only read one of your books so far, but I was enthralled. It was What Matters Most. I am brand new to New England. My husband had a job re location last summer and I am just learning my way around Connecticut. My Mother is visiting here next month and she was the one who shared your book with me. We love things Irish and we love all things Coastal, so it was perfect.
We plan to take a day trying to visit some of the places you mention in your book. I wondered if you could tell me if the retreat home really exists, and if it is in Old Mystic. I cannot get enough of the beauty down there, and am so excited to read more of your books.
    Thank you.
