What Matters Most

What Matters Most

Thanksgiving week, and What Matters Most is out in trade paperback.  I love the cover; it reminds me of Ireland and makes me wish I were walking on the Cliffs of Moher.

The novel picks up where Sandcastles lets off.  It’s a story about two people who’ve loved each other forever but live their lives apart.  Writing the novel, I tried to capture that feeling of complete longing for something you can never have yet, at the same time, carry in your heart at all times.

I find it moving that the novel is coming out in time for Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays.  ”What Matters Most” is a title, but also an all-year-round question.

My family, friends, cats, nature, writing, and readers matter most to me.  What matters most to you?

What matters most? Hmmm. My family, our cats, my friends, good health, refuge from the wild and woolly world, children, reading, the natural world and my connections to all of the above.

What matters most is all of the unexpected blessings that have come my way when I just let Life go the way it is suppose to. In particular is the blessing of my precious granddaughter “Little Linda” and her Yupik family in Alaska. How cool (no pun intended) is that? “Happy Thanksgiving” Luanne!! Hugs.

What matters most to me is my relationship with God. Of course family comes next. The roof over my head, and food to eat,a warm fire in winter, and a cool breeze in the hot summer. And the list goes on, far too long and too many to post. I guess I could say that life itself is most important.

I agree with Janet. Jesus, family, friends and the simple things of life are what are important in life!

Please, please, please write another story about this extended family, maybe exploring Brendan’s history and adoption. I have really enjoyed both Sandcastles, and What Matters Most, and the characters in them. (I read the second one first and had to go buy the first to read second! LOL) My husband’s family is Irish, and he has lived in Connecticut. You make me feel as though I know both of those places, even though I haven’t been there…yet! Thank you for bringing both coasts closer!

Thank you, Terri… I hope you’ll find that my next novel, The Silver Boat, will fulfill your hopes of reading about family. This family is the McCarthys, and their story takes place on Martha’s Vineyard and in Ireland.

What matters most is treating others as you want to be treated with respect and giving to those that are less fortunate than one self. Last is to be willing to forgive others so one can move forward in their life. I have ordered your books and looking forward to reading them.

Like the shell I choose life isn’t perfect, the ridges to me represent bumps in the road that we must overcome to become stronger and wiser in order to tackle the next challenge. What matters most to be is that I continue to have the courage to see through to the other side of these challenges without fear getting in the way.

What matters most to me are the people in my life. Some come and go, others may have a temporary distraction and then there are those rocks that keep me sane and strong. Lulubelle is one solid rock.

Have you written any books since What Matters Most, about any of the same characters in this novel? I found this book intriguing with all the intertwined relationships between the characters, from the past and the present.

What matter most to me is Family. I am thankful I have my birth Dad in my life.I was adopted as a baby. My parents were young when they had me.My birth grandparents were supposed to raise me but things didn’t turn out that way. After I was born my mom went to work in Boston. My Aunt was supposed to call my grandparents to come get me but instead she called my other Aunt and told her my mom ran away and left her baby in the hospital. My Aunt came and got me. She changed her religion when she got married. The nuns found out and went to the house and just took me out. Saying ” Can’t leave a Catholic baby in a non catholic home.” When my mom found out what was going on she called and said she wanted her baby back. They told her I died. One of the nuns had a sister who wanted a little girl, so I was given to her. My birth family all thought I was dead.It was a long search but I found my dad 6 years ago and I cherish every moment we have together.

What matters most to me is my god and my family, immediate and extended. I want every one of them to be helathy, wealthy, and wise. Alas, that hasn’t happened yet, but there is always Hope.

I read What Matters Most over the weekend and then learned yesteray about “perpetual virginity” which I realize nows is perhaps the underlying thesis of the book. As an evangelical Christian I of course do not embrace that doctrine but do have deep feelinfs about adoption/relinquishing and it’s effects on birth mothers and adodptive mother.
Never the less, from a novel aspect = great story.

Fool that I am or may be, I would have sworn that there was a sequel to “What Matters Most”. Am I right?

kathryn, there’s a “prequel” to “what matter most”–”sandcastles”. the two novels stand alone, but “sandcastles” tells the story of the sullivan family and how bernie first met tom.

What Matters Most is family. My kids, my husband, parents, and brothers. Even my extended family, we are very close, like the Kelly’s. Reading your books and the bonds of sisterhood makes me long for a sister, but I’m the only girl in a family of boys. This was my first of your books and I loved it. I am now on my fifth and it is no less captivating than the others. Keep up the great work.
