Summer was the closest we came to pure joy when we were young.  Freedom from school, being set loose on the beach, with adventures so plentiful we didn’t even have to go looking for them.  We had a group of close “summer friends” who we’d see every year from June till September, and we’d be together from first light till we were too exhausted to do anymore.

We’d swim to Gull Island, hike to Uncle Lote’s grave deep in the woods, ride our bikes to Hallmark for peach ice cream.  Once we sailed across the Sound and ran aground on Plum Island, a government facility known mainly for it’s secrecy, and were escorted off the island after promising not to go near farms, circuses, or anywhere there might be hoofed animals for at least ninety days.

We were curious and daring, and we did everything together.  So many of us have stayed close over the years.  We meet when we can—at the beach, in the city, on boats on the water.

Lately I’ve been thinking about those adventures, and realizing it’s time to have some new ones.  Walk on the beach, but maybe a different beach.  Hike a mountain trail to watch stars come out in the velvet sky.  Go somewhere new, take a path you’ve never taken before, see what’s around the bend.

Nothing stays the same, that’s a given.  Other things remain constant: the joy of summer, fresh tomatoes and basil, lemon ice, being together, walking with bare feet along the tideline, looking for starfish.  And especially, being ready for the next adventure.

What do you have planned?  Any trips, vacations?  Visits to long lost friends?  The chance to learn something new?  Kayaking, celestial navigation, electric guitar, fly fishing?

Whatever it is, I  hope you have a great summer and have the best adventure of your life.

Our summers were spent mostly near the bay, riding bikes, chasing the ‘buggy machine’ (mosquito killer), drinking Kool-Aid from plastic cups with red, blue & yellow polka dots, swimming for hours, going to bed before the sun set, watching parades & the smell of sun screen. Summer always came to end when the Miss America Pageant was held & the night our mother took us shopping for our school shoes.

    Hi Luanne!

I love your books very much! My favorite of yours is “Cloud 9″ What a page turner! I love summer, but i can’t do much at the outdoors these days, do to my medical problems. As a child growing up in Europe, i enjoyed every summer to it’s fullest, but it’s been a while since then! :-) Going for a swim, or long walks with my best friends, was for me the most enjoyable experience, since we did a lot of talking a giggling. Sometimes i wish, i had a time machine, so i could rewind the times. where i was still a careless and fearless child, and enjoy the most precious moments of my life once again, Much love.

As a kid I loved being able to read outside all day and not have to worry about anything over summer vacation. Two places I would love to go,New York and Connecticut. Hopefully one day I will get to. =). Hope you are enjoying your summer.

    Love, Melissa

It would be difficult to match a Luanne summer. My absolute favorite passtime is to spend time with my family. I keep my 7 year old granddaughter, Bella, two days a week and we play like 7 year olds. I have learned about ?The Littlest Pet Shop, Squinkies and many other 7 year old’s fun things. We take long walks, catch little golden butterflies. We let them go of course.
One of my favorite books by Luanne is Summer Light. I do reread my favorites. Honestly I love gardening and watching my flowers grow from a piece I have started myself into full grown plants with profuse blossoms.
I will read The Silver Boat very soon. Good things come to those who wait. Who said that?
I am looking forward to beach walks, family bar-b-q’s, a concert or two and reading, reading, reading.

As a kid I would walk or bike to the community pool every day; once in the morning for swim team practice, and then again to frolic, dive, and play cards on the blanket with my friends. I’d get home before dinner and nap on the couch, tired from my aquatic exercise. I can still remember the fresh clean smell of chlorine on my body and the way my lungs would hurt (in a good way) with each inhalation. The sweetest memory is of my mother applying Noxzema to my sun-kissed skin before bed every night.

For the first time in my life I am embarking on my first adventure solo. I have never been in a plane before let alone out of the United States! In about one month i will be flying to Europe with my cousin and spending the entire month of august overseas! Among the places I will traveling are: Paris, Italy(Rome, Venice, florence, Naples), barcelona, Montenegro and croatia! You better believe I will have a few of your books with me on my excellent adventure :)

Thinking back on childhood summers brings back so many wonderful memories. Walking to my grandmother’s house, helping her work in her garden, giggling with my brother under the quilt she and her friends were working and fealing the warm breeze from the open window that was held up with a stick, take me back to years of innocence. As a grandmother today, I just hope I’m making lasting memories with my grandchildren so that one day they can think foldly of their summer memories. Love your postings and looking forward to indulging myself in your books. Regards.

Thank you for writing so many awesome books about Long Island Sound! What you describe above is just how I feel, growing up as a beach girl right down the road from you in Old Saybrook. I now have children of my own, and we try to go to the beach whenever we get a chance. Now my kids have new memories there! My daugther and I love making drippy castles on the sandbars, and my ten year old son tells me how relaxing and friendly it is. Such a beautiful, peaceful place for the whole family.

Luanne: I love your books. I especially enjoyed Cloud Nine. I am very hopeful that you will write a sequel to this book. PLEASE, PLEASE.

Summer is the to time to be outside playing in the sprinkler, having fun in the summer showers, going to the beach. I don’t understand why you don’t see many kids outside playing. They are all inside playing video games. It’s so sad. Get out and enjoy these days. Kick off the shoes and feel the grass and sand.

I love the feel of the warm summer air on bare arms. It is like a hug that means summer is here.

I’ m a huge beach fan, it’s my time for peace and tranquility, I truly get taken away with it and feel extremely lucky to have this gift available to me.

I just finished reading your book ‘Safe Harbour’ and plan on getting ‘Firefly Beach’.
I love stories about sailing and the sea. It was an enjoyable book and I hope that you will write a sequel to it. A bit of mystery is always entertaining.

Growing up our summers were always a family vacation usually at the shore. So when we got married we did the same with our children. We always had a wonderful summer vacation. Now we watch our children doing the same thing with our grandchildren. It’s a wonderful life when you have a wonderful family. Pass it on….
